RC Hood, Jr.

Warrior Son

The figure began to blur and soften. Ja-Dai realized that his father hadn’t told him who the others were. He quickly jumped up from his bed, knocking the bow and arrows to the floor.

“Father, wait…You haven’t told me who the others are. Where I am to meet them.”

“The others will come to you when the time is right. Remember, I will always be with you.”

The energy diminished gradually, switches turned off again and the machinery ceased to hum. Ja-Dai stood there staring upward as the blue light of energy disappeared completely. Ja-Dai, still in a daze threw on his robe and started toward his bedroom door.

He came into the living room. There perched on a metal stand was a beautiful golden falcon. Ja-Dai extended his right arm toward the falcon. Instinctively the falcon jumped on his master’s outstretched arm. Ja-Dai looked at the magnificent bird with love as he slowly walked over to the picture window, he opened it and looked out.

The sun was now high over the city, perched on top of the tall buildings like a beacon of light. Ja-Dai released the falcon. He flew out the window, soaring in the sky like it was his and only his domain. The lesser birds that were also soaring freely in the morning sky fled as the falcon soared toward them. They knew that this proud bird was Phoenix, and when he flew, he flew alone.

Ja-Dai stood at the window staring at his friend as he flew over the city with both pride and sorrow in his heart.

“Fly my friend while the sky is still filled with peace, for who knows how much longer this will be.”
